The speedometers are mechanical type instruments and work on the principle of eddy current generated by a rotating permanent magnet. These are available in a wide range of gear ratios to suit most 2, 3 and 4-wheelers and are manufactured in two basic types-japanese type for trucks, cars, 3-wheelers, scooters and motor-cycles and the light-duty moped type for mopeds, cycles and exercising machines. Pressure gauges (mechanical) use a bourdon tube as the sensing element and gear and-sector mechanism for pointer movement. Tubing from the engine transmits the pressure and temperature gauges are bourdon tube vapour-pressure type and use a copper capillary tube to transmit vapour pressure from the sensor to the gauge. The capillary is protected from damage by a copper/steel wire braiding. Ampere meters indicate the battery charging/drain current and are moving-magnet type. Ge uses a disc magnet in ammeters which makes them very sensitive and accurate and are available in 52 and 60 mm outer case diameters and ranges of 30, 50 and 80 amps.
